When “Radio-Activity” was released in November 1975, Kraftwerk had taken a step from which there was no turning back. The band’s fifth studio album was the first to be recorded entirely without traditional instruments—instead, it featured specially modified synthesizers, sequencers, and studio equipment from Düsseldorf’s Kling Klang Studio.

The album is a concept album that interweaves two levels of meaning: radioactivity as a physical phenomenon—decay, radiation, invisible energy—and radio as a medium, a transmission channel, a connection between sender and receiver. Both levels are woven into the music: short, precise pieces, atmospheric interludes, and an aesthetic of minimalism. The tracks oscillate between concrete sound exploration and catchy melodies—a tension that Kraftwerk would further develop on later albums. To cater to the band’s international audience, the album was released bilingually in German and English. The single release of the title track sold 500,000 copies in France alone.

To mark its 50th anniversary, “Radio-Activity” is available for the first time on Blu-ray Audio. Band founder Ralf Hütter and sound engineer Fritz Hilpert have created a new Dolby Atmos mix based on the original 16-track master tapes—at today’s Kling Klang Studio, the successor to the original production facility. The spatial reproduction lends the album’s precise layers of sound—synthesizer textures, sequencer patterns, atmospheric interludes—a transparency and depth that allow listeners to experience this conceptual work anew in terms of its structural design. The Blu-ray is supplemented by a 5.1 mix in DTS-HD Master Audio as well as a high-resolution stereo version in PCM 48 kHz/24-bit.
