Description

As part of his 2015/2016 concert tour, which took him to selected historic locations around the world, Pink Floyd legend David Gilmour gave two concerts at the amphitheatre in Pompeii in July 2016 – it was the first live performance in front of an audience since the gladiator fights in 79 AD.

For the Briton, it was an emotional return to the city where Adrian Maben’s legendary concert film “Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii” was made in 1971. Together with his long-time partner and “maestro of colours”, Gilmour worked to do justice to the amphitheatre in Pompeii known as the “Spectaculum” and delivered a spectacle worthy of ancient Rome to the audience at this historic site. “It’s a magical place and to come back here and see the stage and the arena was just overwhelming,” he explains, “it’s a place of spirits.”

The concert film “David Gilmour – Live at Pompeii” was directed by Gavin Elder and filmed in 4K and contains highlights from both shows. The concert is an audiovisual experience, including a huge circular cyclorama screen, lasers, pyrotechnics and fantastic performances by the all-star band. No less impressive is the breathtaking 5.1 surround sound mix, which transforms every home cinema into an amphitheatre and lets you experience the atmosphere of this special concert.

The film features songs from the legendary musician’s entire career, including the title tracks from his two number one solo albums “Rattle That Lock” and “On An Island”. In addition, the track listing includes other solo pieces and Pink Floyd classics such as “Wish You Were Here”, “Comfortably Numb” and “One Of These Days”. The latter song is the only one that was already played by the band in 1971. Gilmour also performed great versions of “The Great Gig In The Sky” from the album “The Dark Side Of The Moon” at both concerts, which he plays extremely rarely at solo concerts.
