“Close to the Edge” is Yes’s fifth studio album and has been considered one of the most influential works of progressive rock since its release in 1972. With just three tracks—the title track, which runs over 18 minutes, and the two compositions “And You and I” and “Siberian Khatru,” each about ten minutes long—the band, consisting of Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman, and Bill Bruford, created a multi-layered, uncompromising soundscape that remains a benchmark for the genre to this day.

For this release, the album has been remixed for Blu-ray: Steven Wilson created a new immersive Dolby Atmos mix as well as a new 5.1 mix, which give the album a previously unheard-of sense of spatial depth. The surround mixes are complemented by a new stereo mix as well as instrumental versions of all three tracks. The collection is rounded out by the original album, remastered by Bernie Grundman, which preserves the sound of the original tapes in the best possible quality.

Guitarist Steve Howe describes “Close to the Edge” as perhaps the most significant album in the band’s history: It features the title track, Yes’ first large-scale, extended track, which served as a model for many of the band’s later epic compositions. This reissue now makes it possible, for the first time, to experience the soundscape of “Close to the Edge” in three-dimensional space.
