Description
Unbound and Dangerous is a new live collection by the Doors, compiled by guitarist Robby Krieger, drummer John Densmore and sound engineer Bruce Botnick. The 16 tracks are taken from recordings from the 1970 Roadhouse Blues Tour – the same source material from which the concert album Absolutely Live was produced at the time. For Unbound and Dangerous, the trio chose only the harder, blues-driven performances: recordings from New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Detroit and Hollywood. The only exception is “Soul Kitchen”, recorded on July 21, 1969 at the Aquarius Theatre in Hollywood.
Bruce Botnick, who recorded and produced the original sessions himself at the time, has remixed the recordings himself. The Blu-ray Audio contains his new Dolby Atmos mix as well as a high-resolution stereo mix in 192 kHz/24 bit. The spatial Atmos mix puts the listener in the middle of the concert action and revives the uncontrolled energy of these performances.
The collection opens with “Dead Cats, Dead Rats” as a prologue, before “Break On Through (To The Other Side)” and the epic “When The Music’s Over” follow. The conclusion is an apocalyptic, approximately 15-minute version of “The End”, into which Morrison introduces with the cry “Bring out your dead!”. Liner notes by Krieger, Densmore and Botnick shed light on what made this band so appealing and dangerous.
