Description
Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII documents Pink Floyd during their most creative transitional phase, immediately before their global breakthrough with ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’. The legendary 1972 film, directed by Adrian Maben, shows the band performing a unique concert without an audience in the impressive ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheater in Pompeii – recorded in October 1971. This performance, the first ever at this historic location, features intense versions of ‘Echoes’, ‘A Saucerful of Secrets’ and ‘One of These Days’.
For this 4K UHD Blu-ray, the film was meticulously restored in 4K from the newly discovered original 35mm negative by Lana Topham, Director of Restoration for Pink Floyd. The image restoration was done frame by frame: colors were optimized, details sharpened, and each individual image was edited by hand to preserve the natural beauty of the original while achieving impressive visual clarity. This version combines the 60-minute performance with the additional Abbey Road Studios material for the first time into a complete 90-minute cut.
The sonic centerpiece of this edition is Steven Wilson’s impressive remix of the soundtrack. Wilson, renowned for his audiophile remixes, has remixed the music in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 surround, and high-resolution stereo. His goal was to authentically present the band’s sound as it would have sounded in 1971—with all the details, spatial depth, and raw energy of that special phase. The immersive Dolby Atmos mix (available for the feature film) uses multi-channel technology to make the unique atmosphere of the performance in an abandoned amphitheater even more impressive. In addition, the disc contains rare recordings of the band from Abbey Road Studios, where they began the first sessions for ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ shortly after Pompeii.
This edition invites you to rediscover Pink Floyd at the height of their artistic powers, between psychedelic rock and progressive mastery—a fascinating historical document that shows the band and their music before they rose to world fame, presented in a technically flawless production for modern home theater systems.
