With his debut album, released in 1981, Phil Collins transformed himself from drummer and singer of Genesis to an internationally acclaimed solo artist. “Face Value” was created in a deeply personal phase of his life, marked by the musician’s divorce from his first wife, and is still considered one of the most haunting albums of his career.

Instead of relying on light pop entertainment, Collins opened up with unusual vulnerability and combined elements of soul, art-pop and R&B into a cohesive, personal work. The sound of the album is characterized by the distinctive “gated reverb” drum sound developed by producer Hugh Padgham, which became one of the most famous drum fills in rock history on the centerpiece “In the Air Tonight”. With the Phenix Horns of Earth, Wind & Fire, Collins also brought a lively funk touch to the album, for example on “I Missed Again”, while stylistically he tried his hand at the minimalist folk of “The Roof Is Leaking” as well as an experimental cover version of “Tomorrow Never Knows” by the Beatles.

This Pure Audio Blu-ray presents “Face Value” in an all-new mix created by Steven Wilson in Dolby Atmos, as well as in 5.1 and stereo, giving the album a new spatial depth. It is complemented by the original album mix in its 2016 remastered version in high-resolution stereo quality – two perspectives on an album that maintains its exceptional status to this day.
