Description
Since their founding in 1988 in Halifax, Paradise Lost have been one of the defining voices of Gothic Metal. With albums such as the style-defining “Gothic” (1991) and the broader “Draconian Times” (1995), the band has explored numerous varieties of dark music over the decades, influencing artists of a wide variety of genres. With more than two million albums sold, the band is one of the most established formations in its genre.
With “Ascension”, Paradise Lost release their 17th studio album and at the same time the first completely new work since “Obsidian” – the longest break between two studio albums in the band’s history. The album was produced by guitarist Gregor Mackintosh at Black Planet Studios in East Yorkshire, while drums and vocals were recorded at NBS and Wasteland Studios in Sweden; Mixing and mastering was done by Lawrence Mackrory. Musically, “Ascension” moves between massive riffs and melodic, melancholic passages and thus unites the different facets for which the band is known. The artwork features a painting by George Frederic Watts depicting Death as an enthroned angel.
This limited edition combines CD and Blu-ray audio in one digipak. The Blu-ray contains all the songs from the album in a high-resolution stereo mix as well as in 5.1 surround and in a Dolby Atmos mix, which adds a spatial dimension to the dense, atmospheric soundscapes of “Ascension”. The release is complemented by the two bonus tracks “This Stark Town” and “A Life Unknown” as well as a 16-page booklet.
