Freak Out! is considered one of the first double albums in rock history and an almost unprecedented debut: Frank Zappa and The Mothers Of Invention combined doo-wop, rhythm & blues, orchestral music, free jazz, tape manipulations and biting social satire into a cohesive artistic statement. Set against the backdrop of the US counterculture of the 1960s, the album takes aim at bourgeois conformity, celebrity culture, consumerism and political convenience. The sound collage “The Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet” at the end of the album expanded the possibilities of the LP format at the time and showed that a rock album can function as an independent artistic work.

For the 60th anniversary, this super deluxe edition brings together a total of 105 titles on a Blu-ray and 5 CDs, including numerous previously unreleased material. In addition to a new remaster of the 1966 stereo mix, the edition includes the previously unreleased pre-master mix from 1966, the long-lost and restored mono mix as well as live recordings of the Mothers Of Invention from the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco from 1966.

The Blu-ray Audio offers the album in high-resolution stereo (24bit/192kHz and 24bit/96kHz) and also provides an immersive Dolby Atmos and 5.1 mix by Studio1LA, mixed by Karma Auger and Erich Göbel. In addition to the three archival mixes of the album, the disc contains the bonus track “Groupie Bang Bang” as well as specially produced visualizers for selected recordings.
