Description
“The Moth” is Devin Townsend’s most personal and ambitious work to date—a fully orchestrated rock opera on which he has worked for over a decade. What began as a distant vision became a reality when Townsend was invited to collaborate with the Noord Nederlands Orkest. To write the score himself, he taught himself harmony, counterpoint, and orchestration from scratch—with expert guidance from orchestrator Joseph Stevenson. The result is a meticulously crafted, emotionally profound work in 24 movements that explores self-acceptance, devotion, and the courage to change. A world-class international lineup lends the project its extraordinary sonic richness: longtime collaborators such as Darby Todd, Mike Keneally, and James Leach join guests including Steve Vai, Anneke van Giersbergen, and Lynn Wu.
The limited-edition 10-inch artbook, featuring a 38-page booklet, brings together three distinct dimensions of the work. CD 1 presents the studio album in its original form; CD 2, “The Moth – The Afterlife,” brings the orchestral and choral dimensions to the forefront, thereby offering an alternative, in a sense purer interpretation of the composition; CD 3, “The Moth – The War,” documents the moving live performance with which the work was first publicly performed in the Netherlands in March 2025. The Blu-ray Audio completes the set with the full live film as well as Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res stereo mixes of both the studio album and the Afterlife version—a comprehensive audio document of Townsend’s life’s work.
