Description
Big Big Train, the award-winning progressive rock band, releases its 16th studio album, “Woodcut,” which is also its first full-length concept album. The international lineup brings together musicians from England, Scotland, Italy, the US, Sweden, and Norway to create an ambitious musical work of art that explores the boundaries between creativity, sacrifice, and the fine line between inspiration and madness.
The story revolves around a character named “The Artist,” who struggles with his life and his creative power. One day, he creates a woodcut that he finds exceptionally beautiful—and suddenly finds himself in this woodcut-like parallel world. This continuous narrative, spanning 16 songs and 66 minutes of playing time, feels epic without losing itself—from the intimacy of “Inkwell Black” to the grandeur of “Counting Stars.”
All seven band members make impressive contributions to this work, with frontman Alberto Bravin taking charge of production. With over 400 individual tracks recorded, this was a task of gigantic proportions. The limited edition CD + Blu-ray edition includes detailed liner notes as well as immersive Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround sound mixes by Shawn Dealey (Sweetwater Studios). These high-quality mixes take the spatial depth and fine details of the music to a new level, making “Woodcut” a sonic experience that presents the band’s original artistic vision with impressive clarity.
The striking cover design is by Dorset-based artist Robin Mackenzie—a black-and-white woodcut commissioned by the band specifically for this album. Woodcut is an analog statement in a digital age—a handcrafted, deeply human exploration of art, faith, and perseverance.
