{"id":933,"date":"2015-12-05T00:00:56","date_gmt":"2015-12-04T23:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pureaudiorecordings.com\/product\/import-placeholder-for-882\/"},"modified":"2026-03-16T14:09:26","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T13:09:26","slug":"london-symphony-orchestra-mendelssohn-symphony-no-5-reformation","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/pureaudiorecordings.com\/en\/product\/london-symphony-orchestra-mendelssohn-symphony-no-5-reformation\/","title":{"rendered":"LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA &#8211; Mendelssohn: Symphony No 5 &#8216;Reformation&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the <a href=\"https:\/\/pureaudiorecordings.com\/en\/?s=London+Symphony+Orchestra&amp;lang=en\">London Symphony Orchestra<\/a> join forces once again in the latest instalment of their exploration of <a href=\"https:\/\/pureaudiorecordings.com\/en\/?lang=en&amp;s=Mendelssohn\">Mendelssohn<\/a>\u2019s symphonies.<\/p>\n<p>Mendelssohn\u2019s Symphony No 5, commonly known as the \u2018Reformation\u2019 Symphony, was written in 1830 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Augsberg confession \u2013 a seminal event in\u00a0the Protestant Reformation. Allusions to the symphony\u2019s title and inspiration can be heard throughout the music itself; the Dresden Amen is cited by the strings in the first movement whilst the finale is based on Martin Luther\u2019s well-known chorale Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (\u2018A Mighty Fortress is Our God\u2019).<\/p>\n<p>Coupled with this are two of Mendelssohn\u2019s overtures, Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage and Ruy Blas, both of which were inspired by literary works. Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, based\u00a0on two short poems by Goethe, depicts the journey of sailors at sea with a still adagio opening ultimately giving way to a triumphant homecoming.
