Description
The Who By Numbers – the seventh studio album by British rock legends The Who, produced by Glyn Johns and released in October 1975 – is released for the 50th anniversary as an extensive Super Deluxe Edition box set with a total of 92 previously unreleased audio tracks and mixes. Highlights of the original album include the hits “Slip Kid” and “Squeeze Box”, which reached the Top 10 in the USA, Great Britain and Canada.
The set presents the album from multiple perspectives at once: the freshly remastered original, eleven personal demos by Pete Townshend – ten of them remixed by Pete himself, including eight first-released recordings from the era – as well as unreleased recording sessions from the Ramport and Shepperton studios, early mixes with guide vocals and rare studio recordings. In addition, concert recordings from the “Who Put The Boot In” performance at Vetch Field in Swansea (12 June 1976) complete the collection – Keith Moon’s last big stage night in front of a British audience.
The enclosed Blu-ray Audio contains Pete Townshend’s completely remastered Dolby Atmos mix as well as a 5.1 and a high-resolution stereo mix of the album in 24-bit/96kHz. As the audiovisual centerpiece, a previously unreleased concert video from December 6, 1975 from the Metropolitan Stadium in Pontiac, Michigan – at the time the largest covered rock concert of all time with 76,896 visitors – complements the Blu-ray. The professionally restored recording, recorded on NTSC 2-inch videotape, is one of the few surviving video documents of this last major tour with Keith Moon. The set is accompanied by a 100-page hardcover book with extensive liner notes, rare photos and archive material by Pete Townshend and Who expert Andy Neill.
