“Queen Budapest” celebrates the 40th anniversary of the first stadium rock concert by a Western band behind the Iron Curtain – and, at the same time, Queen’s last live performance captured on film. The concert on July 27, 1986, at Budapest’s Népstadion was a historic milestone: Queen became the first Western rock band to perform behind the Iron Curtain, at a time of profound cultural and political change. In addition to the 80,000 sold-out tickets, an estimated 45,000 more people watched the concert from outside – some fans had even traveled from Russia and Poland.

The film was restored by Sir Peter Jackson’s post-production company Park Road Post Production in New Zealand from the original 35mm footage, which had been captured by a total of 17 cameras. At the same time, a remixed sound was created from the original multi-track recordings – in Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD MA 5.1 and PCM Stereo. The spatial Dolby Atmos mix translates the live energy of the concert into a completely new sound experience and makes Queen sound in the living room as once in the sold-out Népstadion.

“Queen Budapest” showcases the band at the height of their live performance skills, with Freddie Mercury at his best and a setlist spanning their entire songbook: from “One Vision” and “A Kind of Magic” to “Under Pressure” and “Who Wants to Live Forever,” all the way to “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Hammer to Fall,” and “We Are the Champions.” The film was directed by János Zsombolyai.
