Herbert Grönemeyer’s extraordinary album Mensch left a lasting impression in German music history as one of the most successful German-language albums and celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, a limited Blu-ray edition of the already out-of-print studio and home theater edition from 2020 was released on Aug. 26, 2022, presented in an anniversary slipcase. This edition, which is available until the end of 2022, includes the sound formats stereo, surround and Dolby Atmos, as well as the concert recording of the Mensch Live concert in the Arena AufSchalke from 2003 in full HD and Dolby Atmos, just like the previous version.

About the book

Bundled with the Blu-ray Mensch, the book offers a deep insight into the genesis of the album, into the formation of creative processes, into the London of the noughties, a city where it swings.A book, a way of life. With beautiful illustrations. How is music created, how an album? And how was it with Herbert Grönemeyer’s album “Mensch”? Arezu Weitholz tells of this – in many voices and with great warmth.

Where do melodies come from? What does it all start with? “Everything begins with the sound of a friend’s voice,” says Herbert Grönemeyer. Arezu Weitholz has followed the creation process of this album as a text dramaturge from close quarters and goes on a search for traces with this book. Memories and anecdotes, coincidences and strange mistakes, happy circumstances and thoughtful moments from numerous interviews with Herbert Grönemeyer, with companions, musicians and friends combine to form an entrancing round dance. Which song lyrics were discarded? What was it like in the studio and later at the concerts? And what’s the deal with the giant polar bear?
